how to succeed in business

What is true success to you?

What if you spent an entire day doing your passion – what you truly love?  What would you experience?

Years ago, I attended a regional meeting of Ethan Allen furniture dealers – entrepreneurs.  I observed that two owners stood out from the rest, because they showed a deep passion for design, merchandising and sales.  They focused on the opportunities, while the other dealers focused on the obstacles.

Would it surprise you that those two passionate dealers were among the most successful in the country?  I remember leaving the meeting thinking, “Why am I not like that?”  “Where has the ‘fire’ gone in me – for anything?”  or the scarier question “Was it ever there?”

I had lost or forgotten my passion – in some ways, it had been stolen from me.  How did that happen?

In business, our passions can be buried by unhappy customers, disgruntled employees,  impatient vendors, etc.  The pace of life quickens, there is never enough time, and the entrepreneur / owner is pulled in multiple directions, simultaneously.

And so, we settle.  Settle for less than who we truly are or can completely offer.  We hold back.  We stop risking.  We, actually, stop living.

In the movie, The Legend of Baggar Vance [2000] a disillusioned World War I hero, Capt. Rannulph Junah, returns to Savannah.  Before the war Junah was the best golfer in the region.  However, Junah has lost his swing, and his love for golf.

In this scene, Baggar Vance, Junah’s caddie, explains to Hardie Greaves, the boy through whom we are hearing the story, how Junah (or anyone else) can find their one, true Authentic Swing.

Experiment with this idea:   What is your ‘Authentic Swing’?  What is the truest thing about you?  What passion is deep inside you?

Answer that question – pursue that question – begin living into your Authentic Swing. And, life will begin to open up in unimaginable ways.
